A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the month of February 2011 as "American Heart Month"

2

in Pennsylvania and urging all citizens to recognize the

3

critical importance of using correct medical tools and making

4

healthy lifestyle choices that will increase survival rates

5

from cardiac arrest so that thousands of lives can be saved

6

each year.

7

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease is the nation's leading cause

8

of death, with direct and indirect costs estimated to be $503.2

9

billion in 2010; and

10

WHEREAS, Cardiovascular disease accounts for more than 34% of

11

all deaths nationwide; and

12

WHEREAS, Nearly 2,300 Americans die of cardiovascular disease

13

each day, an average of one death every 38 seconds; and

14

WHEREAS, An estimated 785,000 people in the United States

15

will have a new coronary attack, an estimated 470,000 people

16

nationwide will have a recurrent attack and an additional

17

195,000 "silent" coronary attacks will go undiagnosed this year;

18

and

WHEREAS, Each year, 53% of all deaths due to cardiovascular

2

complications and 61% of stroke deaths occur in females; and

3

WHEREAS, More women die of heart disease, stroke and all

4

other cardiovascular diseases than the next five leading causes

5

of death combined, including cancer; and

6

WHEREAS, More than 90% of primary care physicians do not know

7

that heart disease kills more women each year than men; and

8

WHEREAS, Women are less likely than men to receive certain

9

diagnostic testing and treatments, such as angioplasties and

10

stents, for cardiovascular diseases; and

11

WHEREAS, Drug and medical device effectiveness may differ in

12

women and men, yet doctors and researchers often do not know how

13

safe and effective a particular medicine or device is for women;

14

and

15

WHEREAS, The research is clear that there are tools available

16

to increase survival rates from cardiovascular disease; and

17

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association's 2020 impact goal

18

seeks to improve the cardiovascular health of Americans by 20%

19

while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by

20

20% through research, population and community-level

21

interventions and public health and policy measures; and

22

WHEREAS, Efforts of the American Heart Association encourage

23

citizens to help save lives by calling 911 if symptoms occur,

24

become trained in CPR and encourage comprehensive automated

25

external defibrillator programs in their communities; and

26

WHEREAS, Making the right choices relating to proper

27

nutrition, physician activity, doctor visits and other lifestyle

28

methods is essential to living a heart-healthy life; and

29

WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is celebrating

30

February 2011 as "American Heart Month" and promoting education

and awareness by encouraging citizens to learn the warning signs

2

of heart attack and stroke; therefore be it

3

RESOLVED, That the Senate, in recognition of the importance

4

of the ongoing fight against heart disease, recognize February

5

2011 as "American Heart Month" in Pennsylvania and urge all

6

citizens to recognize the critical importance of using correct

7

medical tools and making healthy lifestyle choices that will

8

increase survival rates from cardiac arrest so that thousands of

9

lives can be saved each year.
