A RESOLUTION

Commemorating February 3, 2010, as "National Girls and Women in

2

Sports Day" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, On February 3, 2010, thousands of people across the

4

country will celebrate "National Girls and Women in Sports Day"

5

(NGWSD); and

6

WHEREAS, This year's theme is "Stay Strong, Play On"; and

7

WHEREAS, "National Girls and Women in Sports Day" has been

8

celebrated every year since 1987 on the first Wednesday in

9

February in all 50 states with community-based events honoring

10

the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and

11

women in sports; and

12

WHEREAS, The NGWSD Coalition typically organizes a

13

Washington, DC, event and educates the Congress of the United

14

States on issues of importance to girls and women in sports; and

15

WHEREAS, NGWSD began as a day to remember Olympic volleyball

16

player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to

ensure equality for women's sports; and

2

WHEREAS, Since then, NGWSD has evolved into a day to

3

acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements,

4

the positive influence of sports participation and the

5

continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports;

6

and

7

WHEREAS, The NGWSD Coalition combines the experience and

8

resources of five of the premier organizations that serve girls

9

and women in the United States: Girl Scouts of the United States

10

of America, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for

11

Girls and Women in Sport, the National Women's Law Center and

12

the Women's Sports Foundation; therefore be it

13

RESOLVED, That the Senate commemorate February 3, 2010, as

14

"National Girls and Women in Sports Day" in Pennsylvania and

15

encourage all citizens of this Commonwealth to observe this day

16

to honor girl and women athletes.
