| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing March 2010 as "Women's History Month" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background |
4 | have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of |
5 | this nation in countless ways; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Women have played and continue to play a critical |
7 | economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of the life |
8 | of this nation by constituting a significant portion of the |
9 | labor force working inside and outside of the home; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Women have played a unique role throughout the |
11 | history of this nation by providing the majority of the |
12 | volunteer labor force; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Women were particularly important in the |
14 | establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural |
15 | institutions in this nation; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Women of every race, class and ethnic background |
2 | served as early leaders in the forefront of every major |
3 | progressive social change movement; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Women have been leaders, not only in securing the |
5 | rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the |
6 | abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial |
7 | labor movement and the civil rights movement, all of which |
8 | created a more fair and just society for all; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Lisa J. Baker, Lisa M. Boscola, Jane M. Earll, |
10 | Shirley M. Kitchen, Jane Clare Orie, Christine M. Tartaglione, |
11 | Patricia H. Vance, Kim L. Ward, LeAnna Washington and Mary Jo |
12 | White have earned recognition for public service as members of |
13 | the Senate of this Commonwealth, comprising 20% of its |
14 | membership; and |

15 | WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of women in |
16 | history has often been overlooked and undervalued in the |
17 | literature, teaching and study of American history; and |
18 | WHEREAS, In 1987, and each successive year thereafter, the |
19 | Congress of the United States has declared March as "National |
20 | Women's History Month"; therefore be it |
21 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize March 2010 as "Women's |
22 | History Month" in Pennsylvania. |
