A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of March 2010 as "Kidney Awareness Month"

2

in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Twenty-six million people, or one in eight adults,

4

are in one of the five stages of chronic kidney disease; and

5

WHEREAS, Another 20 million Americans are at risk for

6

developing chronic kidney disease; and

7

WHEREAS, Nearly half of the people in the early stages of

8

chronic kidney disease are not aware that they have a problem

9

with their kidneys; and

10

WHEREAS, The two biggest causes of kidney failure in the

11

United States are high blood pressure and diabetes; and

12

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has one of the highest rates of

13

diabetes in the nation, and diabetes is a leading indicator of

14

chronic kidney disease; and

15

WHEREAS, More than 13,000 Pennsylvanians are receiving

16

dialysis; and

17

WHEREAS, More than 5,700 Pennsylvanians are on the waiting

18

list for a kidney transplant, and more than 83,000 people

throughout the nation are in need of a kidney transplant; and

2

WHEREAS, March 11, 2010, has been proclaimed by the Governor

3

as Pennsylvania Kidney Awareness Day; therefore be it

4

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of March 2010

5

as "Kidney Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania, to spur awareness

6

of kidney disease, urge people to have early symptoms treated

7

and encourage healthy persons to become organ donors whenever

8

possible to help those who need a kidney transplant.
