| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating May 1, 2010, as "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania; and urging citizens to support the research and |
3 | educational endeavors of Pediatric Stroke Network, Inc. |
4 | WHEREAS, The incidence of stroke is not restricted merely to |
5 | adults but also occurs in children before, during and after |
6 | birth; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Pediatric strokes affect one in every 3,000 to 4,000 |
8 | children, including children in utero up to 18 years of age; and |
9 | WHEREAS, At least one out of ten children with ischemic |
10 | stroke will have a recurrence within five years, and up to a |
11 | third of children who have had a stroke will have a recurrent |
12 | stroke; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Acute ischemic stroke has been estimated to occur in |
14 | three in 10,000 births in infants; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Nine percent of children who suffer strokes will |
16 | die; and |
17 | WHEREAS, More than half of children who suffer a stroke will |

1 | develop lifelong cognitive or motor disability in addition to, |
2 | but not limited to, long-term neurological disabilities; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Children suffering a stroke may have paralysis of |
4 | one side of the body as well as seizures, speech and vision |
5 | problems and learning difficulties that may require ongoing |
6 | physical, speech and occupational therapy in addition to |
7 | surgeries such as orthopedic and brain surgery; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Very little is known about childhood stroke, and |
9 | treatment and prevention of childhood stroke is minimal; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Only through medical research and education may |
11 | effective treatment and prevention techniques be developed so |
12 | that childhood stroke can be identified and prevented; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of childhood stroke is imperative |
14 | for implementing early intervention through services such as |
15 | speech, and occupational and physical therapy as well as |
16 | assisting in the prevention of recurrence; therefore be it |
17 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 1, 2010, as |
18 | "Childhood Stroke Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it |
19 | further |
20 | RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all citizens to support the |
21 | efforts, programs, education, services and advocacy that |
22 | Pediatric Stroke Network, Inc., provides as it strives to |
23 | enhance public awareness of childhood stroke. |
