| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating June 7, 2009, as "Alex's Lemonade Stand Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania and encouraging all citizens to contribute to |
3 | the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other pediatric |
4 | cancer research programs. |
5 | WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in |
6 | children under 20 years of age; and |
7 | WHEREAS, About 12,400 children are diagnosed with cancer in |
8 | the United States each year; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Due to advances in research, the childhood cancer |
10 | cure rate has climbed to about 80%; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Alexandra Scott was an extraordinary person who was |
12 | diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, |
13 | two days before her first birthday; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In July 2000, at the age of four, Alex opened her |
15 | first lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer |
16 | research; and |
17 | WHEREAS, On August 1, 2004, Alex passed away at the age of |

2 | WHEREAS, Since Alex's first lemonade stand in 2000, there |
3 | have been more than 4,000 Alex's Lemonade Stands held across |
4 | this nation; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was created to |
6 | accept and manage donations from all over the world; and |
7 | WHEREAS, By January 2007, the Alex's Lemonade Stand |
8 | Foundation raised nearly $10 million for pediatric cancer |
9 | research thereby far surpassing the $1 million monetary goal |
10 | established by Alex before she passed away; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Alex's efforts have garnered national and |
12 | international attention and have inspired hundreds of |
13 | individuals to donate to pediatric cancer research; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation continues to |
15 | raise awareness and financial support for research in childhood |
16 | cancers; and |
17 | WHEREAS, During the weekend of June 5 through 7, 2009, |
18 | volunteers across the country will host an Alex's Lemonade Stand |
19 | to support Alex's cause in the fight to find a cure for |
20 | childhood cancers; therefore be it |
21 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 7, 2009, as "Alex's |
22 | Lemonade Stand Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens |
23 | to contribute to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other |
24 | pediatric cancer research programs. |
