A RESOLUTION
Honoring fallen firefighters Lieutenant Robert Neary and Daniel
Sweeny of Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Firefighters Lieutenant Robert Neary and Daniel
Sweeny made the ultimate sacrifice on Monday, April 9, 2012,
while fighting a five-alarm fire in Kensington; and
WHEREAS, The fire began in an abandoned six-story warehouse
at 3:15 a.m. in the City of Philadelphia and spread to an
adjacent furniture store, as well as several nearby homes; and
WHEREAS, In the process of fighting the blaze, Lieutenant
Neary and Mr. Sweeny lost their lives as a result of a
collapsing wall and roof; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Neary, age 59, was a 37-year veteran of
the fire department, as well as a ten-year Army reservist and a
former police officer; and
WHEREAS, During his years of service in the fire department,
Lieutenant Neary received four commendations for his heroism on
the job; and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Neary is survived by his wife, two sons

and a daughter; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sweeny, age 25, served nearly six years with the
fire department and received two commendations for his heroism
on the job; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sweeny is survived by his father, who is a
retired fire captain, and his mother, as well as three sisters;
and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Neary and Mr. Sweeny are among nearly 30
firefighters who have lost their lives fighting fires this year;
and
WHEREAS, Lieutenant Neary and Mr. Sweeny demonstrated true
courage and heroism while in the line of duty; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate express its sorrow over the passing
of Lieutenant Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeny and offer its
condolences to their families, coworkers and friends.
