| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life of former State Senator Thomas J. Kalman and |
2 | extending condolences to his family. |
3 | WHEREAS, Thomas J. Kalman, husband, father and grandfather, |
4 | military hero, accomplished businessman, public servant and |
5 | philanthropist, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2012; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman was born December 21, 1917, in |
7 | Perryopolis; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman was a graduate of the University of Notre |
9 | Dame, Class of 1939, the University of Pennsylvania School of |
10 | Law, the Officers War College in Norfolk, Virginia, and the |
11 | Naval War College in Rhode Island; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman served his country proudly as a Navy |
13 | officer in World War II, participating in the invasions of |
14 | Sicily and Northern Africa and also serving in the Western Sea |
15 | Frontier; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman retired as a Senior Captain and remained |
2 | active in military affairs as a member of the Retired Officers |
3 | Association and in the following organizations: the Knights of |
4 | Columbus, The American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and |
5 | the Catholic War Veterans; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman established a law firm in Uniontown and |
7 | was a practicing attorney and member of the Pennsylvania Bar |
8 | Association for more than 60 years; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman established and supported numerous |
10 | successful businesses; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman served in the Pennsylvania State |
12 | Legislature as Senator from 1957 to 1970 and as Chief Clerk of |
13 | the Senate from 1971 to 1980; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman was appointed by former President Ford |
15 | and former President Carter to serve on presidential advisory |
16 | commissions; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman was active in the Catholic Church; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman served as a board member at the Institute |
19 | for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame; and |
20 | WHEREAS, In 2007, Mr. Kalman received the distinguished honor |
21 | of being inducted as a Knight of the Equestrian Order of the |
22 | Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, the only lay institution of the |
23 | Vatican State charged with the task of providing for the needs |
24 | of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem and for all the |
25 | activities and initiatives which are necessary to support the |
26 | Christian presence in the Holy Land; and |
27 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman spent his last years surrounded by those |
28 | he loved and those who loved him, enjoying a Notre Dame football |
29 | game on an autumn afternoon, a good meal with beloved friends |
30 | and joyful family gatherings; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Mr. Kalman is survived by his loving and devoted |
2 | wife, Donna Forrai Kalman; his cherished daughters, Mary Ann |
3 | Kalman of Uniontown and Maureen Volker and her husband Michael |
4 | of Collegeville; his sister, Mary Catherine Griglak and her |
5 | husband Laddie; his stepsons, James Forrai and his wife Kristy, |
6 | Edward Forrai and his wife Sonya and Steven Forrai and his wife |
7 | Julie; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and |
8 | nieces and nephews; therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life of former Senator |
10 | Thomas J. Kalman, express its sadness upon the passing of its |
11 | former colleague and offer its condolences to his wife, |
12 | children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and |
13 | nephews; and be it further |
14 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
15 | his widow, Donna Kalman. |
