| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating June 7, 2010, as "African and Caribbean Children |
2 | Day" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Many African and Caribbean immigrants have settled |
4 | in this Commonwealth; and |
5 | WHEREAS, The city of Philadelphia is home to more than |
6 | 200,000 African and Caribbean immigrants, many of whom were |
7 | resettled by local humanitarian organizations under the Refugee |
8 | Act of 1980; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Many African and Caribbean immigrants, especially |
10 | children, encounter problems in acclimating into society due to |
11 | language barriers and differences in customs and cultures; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Many African and Caribbean children and their |
13 | families face problems in education and in obtaining essential |
14 | services; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The African and Caribbean community has made |
16 | important contributions to and has enriched the diversity of |
17 | this Commonwealth; and |
18 | WHEREAS, United States Army General Colin L. Powell (Ret.), |

1 | the 65th United States Secretary of State, was the first African |
2 | and Caribbean American to serve in that post and also the first |
3 | African and Caribbean American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of |
4 | Staff; and |
5 | WHEREAS, It is fitting to recognize the hardships the African |
6 | and Caribbean community face as well as the contributions the |
7 | community has made to the United States and to this |
8 | Commonwealth; therefore be it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 7, 2010, as "African |
10 | and Caribbean Children Day" in Pennsylvania. |
