| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating October 29, 2012, as "Turkish Republic Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, October 29, 1923, is the date of the founding of the |
4 | Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kemal AtatΓΌrk; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Turkey is one of the very few secular democracies in |
6 | the Muslim world and has made significant contributions to |
7 | United States foreign policy in the Balkans, the Middle East, |
8 | Central Asia and the Caucasus and has played a critical role in |
9 | international efforts for peace, prosperity and stability; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Turkey has been a staunch ally of the United States |
11 | and has supported the United States in every major conflict |
12 | since the Korean War; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Turkey has become an integral part of Europe through |
14 | its membership in NATO, the Council of Europe and its quest for |
15 | membership to the European Union; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Americans of Turkish origin play a significant role |
17 | in the ethnic diversity of the United States by incorporating |
18 | their rich spiritual and cultural heritage and their dedication |

1 | to the responsibilities of good citizenship; and |
2 | WHEREAS, We recognize many individuals of Turkish descent who |
3 | have chosen to reside in this Commonwealth and share their rich |
4 | heritage with us; and |
5 | WHEREAS, All Turks and Turkish-Americans will be celebrating |
6 | Turkish Republic Day on October 29, 2012; therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate October 29, 2012, as |
8 | "Turkish Republic Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage all |
9 | citizens of this Commonwealth to recognize the importance of |
10 | this day. |
