| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of May 2009 as "Science: It's Elementary |
2 | Showcase of Student Learning Month" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, During the month of May 2009, school districts |
4 | across this Commonwealth are participating in Science: It's |
5 | Elementary and are hosting Showcases of Student Learning; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Students will showcase scientific discovery and |
7 | actively engage parents, teachers, community members and |
8 | legislators with investigations from the Science: It's |
9 | Elementary modules that highlight important science concepts |
10 | sparked by hands-on, inquiry-based learning; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Last year, thousands of elementary students in |
12 | classrooms throughout more than 60 school districts across this |
13 | Commonwealth showcased hands-on science learning as part of the |
14 | Statewide Science: It's Elementary initiative; and |
15 | WHEREAS, The Department of Education is partnering with ASSET |
16 | (Achieving Student Success through Excellence in Teaching) Inc., |
17 | to provide teacher professional development for 2,700 teachers, |

1 | impacting nearly 72,000 students in 134 school districts across |
2 | 52 counties throughout this Commonwealth; and |
3 | WHEREAS, A nationally respected educational evaluation firm |
4 | found that Science: It's Elementary changes school district |
5 | culture by resulting in more frequent science lessons being |
6 | taught in classrooms, leads to significant improvements in |
7 | student achievement and produces teachers who engage in |
8 | rigorous, ongoing professional development and increase their |
9 | science content knowledge and confidence in teaching science; |
10 | and |
11 | WHEREAS, Because of the partnership between ASSET and the |
12 | Department of Education, elementary students are learning |
13 | science through research-based education practices which are |
14 | delivered by highly dedicated and qualified educators who have |
15 | participated in ASSET's rigorous professional development |
16 | program; and |
17 | WHEREAS, During the 2008-2009 school year, ASSET is impacting |
18 | more than 4,600 teachers and 183,000 students in approximately |
19 | 165 school districts and charter and private schools in western |
20 | Pennsylvania; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Since its establishment in 1994, ASSET is providing |
22 | school districts across this Commonwealth with quality |
23 | educational opportunities by bringing together governmental |
24 | agencies, corporations, foundations and universities in support |
25 | of science education reform; therefore be it |
26 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the outstanding |
27 | achievements of the science education reform initiative, |
28 | Science: It's Elementary, and designate the month of May 2009 as |
29 | "Science: It's Elementary Showcase of Student Learning Month" in |
30 | Pennsylvania. |
