A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF BRYAN HYMAN BLUESTEIN OF COLUMBIA AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bryan Hyman Bluestein of Columbia on September 11, 2014; and

Whereas, in preparation for his planned career in law, the young Bryan graduated from Cardinal Newman High School and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia, where he was a letterman in swimming and graduated with a degree in business. Later, he received his juris doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law; and

Whereas, as good friends and classmates at the law school, Bryan and Ralph S. Kennedy, Jr., presently a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, enjoyed many lively legal discussions, as well as golf outings at Linrick Golf Course; and

Whereas, however, Bryan, also known as "Blue" to friends and family, believed continuing the family business was his responsibility, so he joined his mother, Estelle, at Bluestein's, a well-known downtown landmark located in Columbia's Vista area since 1959. For most of his adult life, Bryan ran the store and through it built relationships with customers across the State that went far beyond the mere sales of goods; and

Whereas, "Blue" prided himself on knowing customers and their purchasing habits. He never had a cash register; he did the math in his head. While he enjoyed the camaraderie that comes with being a shopkeeper, he would lock the doors immediately at five o'clock and be home fifteen minutes later to play with his children; and

Whereas, an athlete at heart, Bryan especially relished golf, running, and all things Georgia Bulldogs. He was also an adventurous soul who had traveled the world. Spain was his favorite destination, and he reveled in introducing his family and friends to new places; and

Whereas, in addition, Bryan Bluestein had compassion for the less fortunate. His friend Richard Pittenger said of him that when they went out to eat, "Blue" might order a second dinner "to go" and give it to a homeless person he'd noticed outside; and

Whereas, Bryan Bluestein leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Marti; their three children, Kinsey, Sydney, and Reece, who were his greatest joys in life; his mother, Estelle Bluestein; his sister, Barbra Dreesen; and a host of friends. He will be missed. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Bryan Hyman Bluestein of Columbia and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mrs. Marti Miles Bluestein for the family.
