A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE MUSEUM AND RAILROAD HISTORICAL CENTER IN GREENWOOD UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS GRAND RE-OPENING CELEBRATION.
Whereas, the members of the Senate are pleased to learn that after a few years of extensive renovations, the Railroad Historical Center in Greenwood is set to reopen in October, 2015; and
Whereas, L.B. Adams and Charles H. Herndon established the museum in 1970 as a part of South Carolina's Tricentennial celebration. Since its opening, the Railroad Historical Center has been an icon to residents of Greenwood; and
Whereas, the museum attracts school groups, rail fans, and tourists each year and serves as a hub for the arts and culture in Greenwood; and
Whereas, the Railroad Historical Museum railcar collection has undergone a full scale renovation over the past few years. All of the railcars have been repainted inside and out to match the original design of the cars; and
Whereas, these renovations were sponsored by the City of Greenwood, the National Heritage Corridor, the Self Family Foundation, and many other private donors; and
Whereas, visitors will enjoy seeing the fully restored Baldwin Steam Locomotive, built in 1906, the "Carolina" Executive Car, which served as an office car for Piedmont and Northern Railroad Executives, and the 2102 Interurban Electric Car which ran from Greenwood to Spartanburg in 1919 as an electric trolley car. Additionally, the exterior views of the Pullman diner, sleeper, and passenger cars will captivate visitors' imaginations; and
Whereas, the Railroad Historical Center celebrates Greenwood's diverse railroad history, filled with stories of hardworking individuals who believed in the greatness of Greenwood; and
Whereas, the city will celebrate the grand re-opening of the Railroad Historical Center railcar collection on Saturday, October 24, 2015, at the Railroad Historical Center; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate are grateful for the impact this museum continues to have on the Greenwood community and extend best wishes for a long and successful future. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the Museum and Railroad Historical Center in Greenwood upon the occasion of its grand re-opening celebration.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Museum and Railroad Historical Center.
