A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEMOCRATIC WOMEN'S COUNCIL ON THEIR HARD WORK, COMMITMENT TO THE DEMOCRATIC CAUSE, AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY AND TO RECOGNIZE THE 2014 "DAY IN BLUE" AT THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATEHOUSE.
Whereas, March 26, 2014 is the Democratic Women's Council's 2014 "Day in Blue" at the South Carolina Statehouse, a day meant to raise awareness about democratic women seeking to run for office; and
Whereas, the Democratic Women's Council is a membership and volunteer-based organization of democratic women working together to forward the democratic cause in the State of South Carolina; and
Whereas, the Democratic Women's Council's mission is to encourage, empower, and support politically active women in the State. The Democratic Women's Council highlights education and advocacy and provides opportunities for members and affiliates to connect with community leaders, politicians, and like-minded Democratic women and men from around the country; and
Whereas, the South Carolina Democratic Women's Council was formed in the 1960's and was instrumental in raising awareness of the need for women candidates across the state. In 1978, Nancy Stevenson became the first female lieutenant governor and many other female candidates were elected to the South Carolina Senate and House of Representatives because of the Council's work. The state Council stayed active until the 1980's and was reactivated in 1996 under the direction of Kathy Hensley; and
Whereas, the Democratic Women's Council chartered with the National Federation of Democratic Women in 2003; and
Whereas, currently under the leadership of Susan Yarborough Smith, the Council looks forward to many more years of continued success. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate, by this resolution, commend the South Carolina Democratic Women's Council on their hard work, commitment to the democratic cause, and contributions to their community and recognize the 2014 "Day in Blue" at the South Carolina Statehouse.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina Democratic Women's Council.
