BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 351, Local Government | ||
Code, is amended by adding Section 351.905 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 351.905. ASSIGNMENT OF TRAFFIC CITATIONS TO JUSTICES | ||
OF THE PEACE IN LARGE COUNTIES. A sheriff and each constable in a | ||
county with a population of one million or more shall ensure that, | ||
in each county fiscal year, each justice of the peace in the county | ||
is assigned, to the extent possible, an equal number of citations | ||
for a violation of highway law under Title 7, Transportation Code, | ||
issued by county law enforcement in the county. | ||
SECTION 2. Section 351.905, Local Government Code, as added | ||
by this Act, applies only to a county fiscal year that begins on or | ||
after the effective date of this Act. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
