relating to the eligibility for free prekindergarten programs in | ||
public schools of certain children who are eligible for the | ||
subsidized child-care program administered by the Texas Workforce | ||
Commission. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 29.153, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (b-1) to read as follows: | ||
(b-1) Notwithstanding Subsection (b), any child who is at | ||
least three years of age is eligible for enrollment in a | ||
prekindergarten class under this section if: | ||
(1) the class is provided through a partnership | ||
between a school district or open-enrollment charter school and a | ||
community-based child-care provider described by Subsection (g); | ||
and | ||
(2) the child is eligible for subsidized child-care | ||
services provided through the child-care services program | ||
administered by the Texas Workforce Commission. | ||
SECTION 2. Section 29.153(b-1), Education Code, as added by | ||
this Act, applies beginning with the 2023-2024 school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
