| relating to an exemption for teachers and retired teachers from the | ||
| payment of a fee for registration of a motor vehicle. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Subchapter J, Chapter 502, Transportation Code, | ||
| is amended by adding Section 502.458 to read as follows: | ||
| Sec. 502.458. TEACHER AND RETIRED TEACHER EXEMPTION. (a) | ||
| In this section, "teacher" means a principal, supervisor, classroom | ||
| teacher, school counselor, or other full-time professional | ||
| employee who is required to hold a certificate issued under | ||
| Subchapter B, Chapter 21, Education Code. | ||
| (b) A vehicle may be registered without payment if the | ||
| vehicle is owned or leased by a person who is a teacher or a retired | ||
| teacher. | ||
| (c) An application for registration under Subsection (b) | ||
| must be accompanied by proof of the applicant's entitlement to the | ||
| exemption. The department shall adopt rules relating to the proof | ||
| of entitlement to the exemption, which may include, for retired | ||
| teachers, statements or other communications issued by the Teacher | ||
| Retirement System of Texas that evidence payment of an annuity from | ||
| the system. | ||
| SECTION 2. Section 502.458, Transportation Code, as added | ||
| by this Act, applies only to an application submitted on or after | ||
| the effective date of this Act. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019. | ||
