provided by certain public schools. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 33, Education Code, is | ||
amended by adding Section 33.911 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 33.911. HALAL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH OPTION. (a) In this | ||
section, "halal" has the meaning assigned by Section 17.881, | ||
Business & Commerce Code. | ||
(b) This section applies only to a school district or | ||
open-enrollment charter school that is wholly or partly located in | ||
a county: | ||
(1) with a population of 2.1 million or more; or | ||
(2) that is adjacent to a county described by | ||
Subdivision (1). | ||
(c) On request by a student or the parent or person standing | ||
in parental relation to the student, a school district or | ||
open-enrollment charter school to which this section applies shall | ||
provide a halal option to the student for any breakfast or lunch | ||
program provided by the district or school. | ||
SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026 | ||
school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
