R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the |
|
National Institutes of Health, has designated January 28 through |
|
February 3, 2013, as National Drug Facts Week in order to educate |
|
teens about substance abuse and addiction; and |
|
WHEREAS, According to available figures, more than 10 percent |
|
of high school seniors admit to the nonmedical use of prescription |
|
painkillers, while approximately one-third report having used |
|
illicit drugs within the past year and more than 20 percent |
|
acknowledge having smoked marijuana during the past month; while |
|
teens often lack accurate knowledge about drugs and their effects, |
|
they are frequently exposed to myths about drugs and drug use by way |
|
of television, movies, music, the Internet, and their peers; and |
|
WHEREAS, National Drug Facts Week was launched in 2010 as an |
|
effort to help teens make informed and responsible choices by |
|
connecting them with credible health experts; at school assemblies |
|
and other community-based events across the country, students will |
|
be able to ask scientists questions about the health and behavioral |
|
effects of drug use, and they are also invited to organize drug |
|
awareness activities in their own neighborhoods; and |
|
WHEREAS, Society as a whole benefits when young people are |
|
empowered to think critically about their lifestyle choices, and by |
|
participating in this important observance, the State of Texas is |
|
helping teens to make enlightened decisions today and in the years |
|
ahead; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize January 28 through February 3, 2013, |
|
as National Drug Facts Week and encourage young Texans to learn more |
|
about this serious issue. |
