H.R. No. 110

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the
National Institutes of Health, has designated January 28 through
February 3, 2013, as National Drug Facts Week in order to educate
teens about substance abuse and addiction; and
WHEREAS, According to available figures, more than 10 percent
of high school seniors admit to the nonmedical use of prescription
painkillers, while approximately one-third report having used
illicit drugs within the past year and more than 20 percent
acknowledge having smoked marijuana during the past month; while
teens often lack accurate knowledge about drugs and their effects,
they are frequently exposed to myths about drugs and drug use by way
of television, movies, music, the Internet, and their peers; and
WHEREAS, National Drug Facts Week was launched in 2010 as an
effort to help teens make informed and responsible choices by
connecting them with credible health experts; at school assemblies
and other community-based events across the country, students will
be able to ask scientists questions about the health and behavioral
effects of drug use, and they are also invited to organize drug
awareness activities in their own neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Society as a whole benefits when young people are
empowered to think critically about their lifestyle choices, and by
participating in this important observance, the State of Texas is
helping teens to make enlightened decisions today and in the years
ahead; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby recognize January 28 through February 3, 2013,
as National Drug Facts Week and encourage young Texans to learn more
about this serious issue.
