WHEREAS, Proud residents of the City of Brownsville are | ||
gathering in Austin on January 29, 2025, to celebrate Brownsville | ||
Day at the State Capitol; and | ||
WHEREAS, The southernmost city in Texas, Brownsville has | ||
played an important role in the state's storied history; during | ||
the Mexican-American War, a military fort was constructed at the | ||
site, and soon after, it was named Fort Brown in honor of Major | ||
Jacob Brown, who died during an attack on the stronghold; the | ||
area became part of the state of Texas with the signing of the | ||
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, and five years later, it was | ||
officially incorporated as Brownsville; the city also served as a | ||
hub for trade with Mexico during the Civil War, and in the | ||
following decades, its economy benefited from the cattle and | ||
transportation industries; and | ||
WHEREAS, Today, Brownsville is the largest city in the Rio | ||
Grande Valley, spanning nearly 150 square miles and boasting a | ||
population of approximately 185,000; the city serves as the | ||
county seat of Cameron County, and it has built a reputation as a | ||
leader in innovation, space exploration, and cross-border trade; | ||
the city has also demonstrated a steadfast commitment to | ||
sustainable growth, economic development, and enhancing the | ||
quality of life for its residents; and | ||
WHEREAS, Brownsville has fostered a vibrant culture that | ||
reflects the enduring partnership between the United States and | ||
Mexico; the city hosts a number of festivals and events to | ||
celebrate its Mexican American heritage and traditions, and it | ||
works to strengthen the bonds of unity, friendship, and shared | ||
purpose between residents on both sides of the Rio Grande; and | ||
WHEREAS, Celebrating their rich history as they work to | ||
build an even brighter future, the citizens of Brownsville are | ||
justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to | ||
honor their contributions to the progress and prosperity of the | ||
Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 89th | ||
Legislature, hereby recognize January 29, 2025, as Brownsville | ||
Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting | ||
delegation. | ||
