Celebrating the life of Ronald Lewis Slough.

WHEREAS, Ronald Lewis Slough, a longtime community leader in Buena Vista, died on September 15, 2023; and

WHERERAS, after graduating from Natural Bridge High School, Ronald "Ronnie" Slough gained employment in 1964 with Mundet-Hermetite, Inc., and was a consistent and reliable employee for 33 years; and

WHEREAS, in 1970, Ronnie Slough joined what was then the Buena Vista Volunteer Rescue Squad and ultimately became a lifetime member, serving his community for 53 years; and

WHEREAS, from the time Ronnie Slough joined the rescue squad, he devoted himself to learning how the squad operated and continually strived to increase his knowledge of its operations so that the agency ran effectively and efficiently; and

WHEREAS, Ronnie Slough served in various leadership roles within the Buena Vista Rescue Squad, including many years as president, the capacity in which he was serving at the time of his passing; and

WHEREAS, Ronnie Slough was instrumental to the Buena Vista Rescue Squad's transition to a career staff to ensure 24-hour coverage for the community; he also assisted in overseeing numerous upgrades to the squad's building so that career staff would be accommodated in a professional and efficient manner; and

WHEREAS, Ronnie Slough had a vision for the future needs of the rescue squad and the community, and he was instrumental in upgrading the former van-style ambulances to the more modern box-style ambulances, giving great care and attention to the quality of the vehicles' manufacturer; and

WHEREAS, Ronnie Slough also found time to participate on the Buena Vista Rescue Squad's emergency medical services team for 12 years and the vehicle extrication team for 15 years and also served locally as the emergency coordinator for Rockbridge County Emergency Management; and

WHEREAS, Ronnie Slough became active in the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Inc., (VAVRS) in 1976, beginning as a junior squad advisor, then serving as the District 1 vice president for seven years, then serving as the chief rescue officer, training officer, secretary, and vice-president; and

WHEREAS, in September 1995, Ronnie Slough was elected president of VAVRS and re-elected for a second term the following year; he was inducted as a Life Member of VAVRS in September 1994 and into the Virginia Life Saving and Rescue Hall of Fame in 1997; and

WHEREAS, Ronnie Slough not only held many leadership positions within VAVRS, he was also very active in teaching others; whether as an instructor-trainer in an emergency vehicle operators course or as a teacher in a farm machinery extrication course and other classes, he held a keen interest in sharing his knowledge by teaching others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Ronald Lewis Slough; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare copies of this resolution for presentation to his family and to members of the Buena Vista Rescue Squad as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation for his service and respect for his memory.
