WHEREAS, L. Clarke Jones, Jr., a respected developer from Richmond, died on January 5, 2010; and WHEREAS, Clarke Jones graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and received a bachelor's degree from Duke University; a stellar athlete, he played 60 minutes in the Blue Devils' 29 - 26 Sugar Bowl victory over Alabama in 1945; and WHEREAS, Clarke Jones proudly served his country during World War II as a Naval Officer in the Pacific area before returning to Richmond; and WHEREAS, Clarke Jones served as President of the Jones Realty and Construction Corp. for approximately 60 years; he developed the well-known residential subdivisions of Sleepy Hollow and Countryside in Henrico County and Jetty's Reach in Northumberland County; and WHEREAS, a man of integrity and vision, Clarke Jones was known for his ability to create subdivisions that blended in with the surrounding environment and created harmonious and peaceful places to live; and WHEREAS, Clarke Jones was dedicated to his work and was a member and past president of the Richmond and Virginia Home Builders Associations and was elected to the Virginia Home Builders Association Hall of Fame in 1992 in recognition of his long and distinguished career; and WHEREAS, an avid outdoorsman, Clarke Jones was a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited, president of the Toano Hunting and Fishing Club, and served on the Chesapeake Bay Local Assistance Board from 1988 to 1995; and WHEREAS, Clarke Jones lived his faith through his actions and as a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, a dedicated family man, Clarke Jones will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 63 years, JoAnne Paty Jones; their four sons, L. Clarke Jones III, C. Paty Jones, Captain (USN Ret.), R. Bingham Jones, and H. Kevin Jones and their families; one daughter, Beth J. Malone, and her family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated businessman and outstanding Virginian, L. Clarke Jones, Jr.; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of L. Clarke Jones, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory. |
