HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 207
Commending the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, on a Saturday afternoon in the spring of 1960, Randolph Jones, Bill Fuller, and Billy Vaughan had a discussion and shared their concerns about the safety of the citizens of South Hill and eastern Mecklenburg County and the need for a rescue squad; and

WHEREAS, out of the concerns of these founders, the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., was formed with 27 charter members and Randolph Jones as the squad's first captain; and

WHEREAS, since its founding on April 13, 1960, the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., has served the citizens of South Hill, eastern Mecklenburg County, and surrounding areas, providing essential medical and rescue operations; and

WHEREAS, Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., answered its first call on July 26, 1960, and since that time has faithfully answered thousands of calls; and

WHEREAS, in addition to basic medical and rescue operations, Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., assists the community by providing standby medical personnel and equipment for public events, school and club safety demonstrations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and emergency medical technician services; and

WHEREAS, Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., is the only volunteer rescue squad in the state to be accredited by the Office of Emergency Medical Services to teach paramedic training and other certification programs; and

WHEREAS, because of its reputation for professionalism and success, the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., has been called upon to assist with rescue efforts in disasters in other areas, benefiting many communities and building relationships with other localities and states; and

WHEREAS, celebrating its 50th anniversary on April 13, 2010, the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., is one of the oldest volunteer rescue squads in Mecklenburg County; and

WHEREAS, during its 50-year history, the members of the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., have touched the lives of countless individuals; and

WHEREAS, the dedicated volunteers of the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., have generously given their time and talents, often put their own personal safety at risk, and in some cases have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community; and

WHEREAS, the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., has brought honor and respect to its members and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., and its outstanding members on the occasion of their 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Southside Rescue Squad, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for the organization's dedication to the well-being of its fellow citizens and best wishes for a joyful anniversary celebration.
