HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 236
Celebrating the life of George Samuel Hobart.

WHEREAS, George Samuel Hobart, a veteran and former federal employee who helped others experience the joys of the performing arts as a longtime usher at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, died on July 6, 2023; and

WHEREAS, George Hobart was born in Brooklyn, New York, and served his country as a member of the United States Navy during the Korean War; and

WHEREAS, after his military service, George Hobart attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst through the GI Bill and earned a bachelor's degree in history; and

WHEREAS, George Hobart worked in the office of the chief of military history at the Pentagon, then transferred to the Library of Congress, where he became the curator of documentary photographs in the Prints and Photographs Division; and

WHEREAS, a champion for the performing arts, George Hobart was one of the original ushers at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and served in that role for more than 50 years; and

WHEREAS, George Hobart was a talented vocalist who sang with the Arlingtones Barbershop Chorus, the Clarendon United Methodist Church choir, the Medical Musical Group, and the Jefferson Chorus in his retirement community; and

WHEREAS, George Hobart was also an avid tennis player who was active with teams in Virginia and Maryland, and he once won a gold medal in men's 70 and over tennis at the Senior Olympics; and

WHEREAS, George Hobart will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of nearly 20 years, Marjorie; his children, Robert, Ted, and Lauren, and their families; his stepchildren, Edwin and Anita, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of George Samuel Hobart; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of George Samuel Hobart as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
