WHEREAS, Janet Mary Corcoran O'Neil, a highly admired member of the Arlington and Richmond communities, died on June 27, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Janet O'Neil grew up on Moulton Street in Newton Lower Falls, Massachusetts; she was a straight-A student and excelled in athletics, playing tennis, basketball, and field hockey, as well as pitching on a boys' sandlot baseball team; and
WHEREAS, Janet O'Neil won a full scholarship to the William F. Connell School of Nursing at Boston College, where she served as president of the local National Student Nurses' Association chapter and graduated magna cum laude; and
WHEREAS, Janet O'Neil worked as a school nurse at the Brussels American School while her former husband, Bill, was deployed in Belgium; and
WHEREAS, Janet O'Neil subsequently continued her education at the Catholic University in Washington, D.C., earning a master's degree in social work; she pursued a career in urban social work for many years before retiring in Arlington and later settling in Richmond; and
WHEREAS, Janet O'Neil was an active volunteer who strove to enhance the quality of life in her community, and she volunteered her time and leadership to the Arlington County Democratic Committee as a precinct captain; and
WHEREAS, Janet O'Neil enjoyed fellowship and worship with the congregation of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Arlington, where she was a member of the choir and a founding member of the meditation group; and
WHEREAS, Janet O'Neil will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her sons, Mark, John, and Matthew, and their families, and by numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Janet Mary Corcoran O'Neil; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Janet Mary Corcoran O'Neil as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
