HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 361
Celebrating the life of Henry Lee Valentine II.

WHEREAS, Henry Lee Valentine II, who strengthened the Richmond community through his achievements as a respected public servant and business leader died on September 21, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Henry Valentine grew up in Richmond and attended the Woodberry Forest School, where he was a multisport athlete, captain of two sports teams, and a prefect; after graduation, he was drafted by the United States Army and served the nation at the end of World War II; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable military service, Henry Valentine flourished at the University of Virginia, joining several clubs, organizations, and honor societies; he was elected as president of the student council and was a talented member of the university's tennis team, who won singles and doubles championships in the Richmond City Tennis Tournament; and

WHEREAS, Henry Valentine joined the independent financial services firm Davenport & Company in 1950 when it had only about 15 employees, and when he completed his tenure as chair in 2012, the company had grown to more than 400 employees; and

WHEREAS, Henry Valentine ultimately retired from Davenport & Company in 2021, leaving a legacy of excellence to his colleagues; and

WHEREAS, Henry Valentine was elected to the Richmond City Council in 1970 and served in that capacity for eight years, including two years as vice mayor; he promoted inclusion, collaboration, and mutual understanding in all his endeavors and served the Richmond community with integrity, generosity, selflessness, and humility; and

WHEREAS, Henry Valentine later worked with other business and community leaders to establish Richmond Renaissance, a local nonprofit dedicated to developing the economy and atmosphere of the city's downtown area, and served as board member of the organization for 15 years; he offered his leadership and expertise to a wide range of other civic and service organizations over the course of his career; and

WHEREAS, among many awards and accolades, Henry Valentine received the Humanitarian Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1996 and was inducted into the Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame in 2010; and

WHEREAS, in later life, Henry Valentine was known for his prowess on the golf course; he recorded several holes in one and, beginning at age 70, achieved a 22-year streak of shooting his age; he took great pride in supporting his children and grandchildren at their own athletic events, attending more than 1,000 games, rain or shine; and

WHEREAS, Henry Valentine enjoyed fellowship and worship with the Richmond community at Saint James's Episcopal Church, where he was a member of the vestry and president of the endowment board; and

WHEREAS, Henry Valentine will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife of 68 years, Peggy; his children, Margy, Henry III, Ida, and Ned, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Henry Lee Valentine II, a public servant and business leader in Richmond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Henry Lee Valentine II as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
