WHEREAS, Amazon's Metropolitan Park (HQ2) in Arlington has been recently awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Certification, the highest level of LEED green building certification; and
WHEREAS, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the LEED certification system is a globally adopted green building rating system in the world and guides design, construction, and operations practices that improve environmental and human health; and
WHEREAS, Amazon's Metropolitan Park is the largest newly constructed building built according to LEED v4 Building Design and Construction guidelines in the world to achieve LEED Platinum Certification; and
WHEREAS, Amazon's Metropolitan Park, which serves as the company's second headquarters, was built with sustainability at its core, using new, climate-friendly solutions such as low-carbon concrete, mass timber, electrified energy-efficient operations, advanced ways to reuse water, and two acres of landscaped roofs with native plants; and
WHEREAS, when determining its certification, USGBC recognized that Amazon's Metropolitan Park implemented practical and measurable strategies and solutions in the areas of sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality; and
WHEREAS, the buildings at Amazon's Metropolitan Park are fully electric and are powered entirely by renewable energy, representing a meaningful step in Amazon's efforts to decarbonize its real estate portfolio as part of the company's commitment to The Climate Pledge; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Amazon's Metropolitan Park (HQ2) for receiving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Certification; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Amazon's Metropolitan Park (HQ2) as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for Amazon's dedication to creating a more sustainable workplace and world.
