WHEREAS, Alexis Grandis of Leesburg, a student at Belmont Ridge Middle School, turned a casual hobby into an admirable charitable endeavor by knitting dozens of caps and donating them to young people in Loudoun County who were in need; and

WHEREAS, the 13-year-old, who named her endeavor Hopeful Hats, started crafting hand-loomed knitted hats in 2015 when she was home from school with a mild illness; Alexis Grandis had some knitting materials on hand and started to make caps; and

WHEREAS, loom knitting process quickly became a routine pastime for the talented and energetic teenager, and Alexis Grandis also discovered that it was something she liked to do in her spare time; during the summer and fall, she fashioned dozens of brightly colored hats; and

WHEREAS, after she was encouraged to sell her creations, Alexis Grandis instead decided to donate her hand-made caps, as she preferred to make a difference in people's lives, not a profit—thus Hopeful Hats was born; and

WHEREAS, Alexis Grandis' mission is to help underprivileged young people stay warm in the winter; donating knitted caps is her way to assist children and young adults who are less fortunate than she is; and

WHEREAS, a few days before Christmas, Alexis Grandis delivered 75 winter hats to Mobile Hope Loudoun, a charitable organization, to distribute to at-risk, precariously housed, or homeless youth 24 years old and younger living in Loudoun County; and

WHEREAS, Alexis Grandis hopes that her efforts—which sprung out of a hobby she enjoyed that has become a favorite activity—will inspire other young people in her community to develop fun ways to help those in need; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Alexis Grandis hereby be commended for starting Hopeful Hats and donating 75 hand-knitted caps to help underprivileged young people in Loudoun County stay warm in cold weather; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Alexis Grandis as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect and admiration for her creative efforts to help those in need.
