Commending Laurice Malbon Yarn.

WHEREAS, Laurice Malbon Yarn, a dedicated educator and community leader, has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to service on behalf of the residents of Virginia Beach throughout her lifetime; and

WHEREAS, Laurice Yarn's upbringing during the era of segregation in Princess Anne County, now part of Virginia Beach, instilled in her a deep sense of resilience, determination, and advocacy for equality and justice; and

WHEREAS, despite facing challenges during the integration of schools, Laurice Yarn chose to remain at a predominantly Black high school, where she continued her education and emerged as a beacon of inspiration for her peers; and

WHEREAS, Laurice Yarn pursued higher education at Virginia State College, now known as Virginia State University, and Old Dominion University; and

WHEREAS, as the youngest of six children, Laurice Yarn was nurtured by her mother, who instilled in her the value of education and community involvement, fostering a legacy of leadership and service within the family; and

WHEREAS, Laurice Yarn's early experiences of community engagement, including her active participation in political activities encouraged by her mother, laid the foundation for her lifelong dedication to advocating for the rights and empowerment of others; and

WHEREAS, throughout her career as an educator, Laurice Yarn exemplified excellence and dedication, not only in the classroom but also in her efforts to support and uplift her students, often going above and beyond to ensure their success and well-being; and

WHEREAS, Laurice Yarn's commitment to fostering interest in math and science led her to establish the Cooperating Hampton Roads Organization for Minorities in Engineering, which provides opportunities for Black students to pursue careers in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering fields and empowers future generations; and

WHEREAS, Laurice Yarn's involvement in politics, from her high school years to her active participation in various political campaigns, including those of Hillary Clinton and presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Barack Obama, reflects her dedication to advocating for progressive change and inclusive representation; and

WHEREAS, upon her retirement, Laurice Yarn continued her service to the community through mentoring and tutoring programs, embodying the values of compassion, empathy, and support for those in need; and

WHEREAS, Laurice Yarn's tireless efforts in promoting education, equality, and civic engagement have left an indelible mark on the Virginia Beach community, inspiring countless individuals to strive for excellence and contribute positively to society; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Laurice Malbon Yarn hereby be commended for her outstanding contributions to education, community leadership, and advocacy for social justice; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Laurice Malbon Yarn as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her unwavering dedication to the betterment of society.
