WHEREAS, Spring Hill Baptist Church received a 2018 Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Award for its exceptional outreach to the residents of Blackstone and communities throughout the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, the Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Awards are presented annually to recognize the generous contributions of nine individuals, groups, and businesses in Virginia; Spring Hill Baptist Church received the award in the Faith-Based Organization category; and
WHEREAS, Spring Hill Baptist Church is a proactive member of the diverse Blackstone community, working diligently to identify and address local needs through innovative, effective programs and outreach efforts; and
WHEREAS, members of Spring Hill Baptist Church donate and volunteer with food pantries, clothes closets, and other charitable organizations; provide activities and assistance to elderly and shut-in residents; and host tutoring and mentorship programs for youths, as well as job fairs and continuing education classes for adults; and
WHEREAS, Spring Hill Baptist Church hosts many other community events, including a summer gym, the Harvest Festival, the Thanksgiving Day Community Luncheon, and programs to support children, seniors, and less-fortunate families during the Christmas season; and
WHEREAS, Spring Hill Baptist Church has strengthened the community by building trust and fostering understanding between local residents and law-enforcement officers through weekly neighborhood cook-outs, a summer basketball league, and the creation of a Blackstone Police Department chaplain's program, which provides counseling to officers and victims of crimes; and
WHEREAS, Spring Hill Baptist Church provides unique opportunities for fellowship and worship, including an annual community-wide worship service attended by hundreds of people and community Baptism services attended by candidates from communities throughout Virginia; and
WHEREAS, Spring Hill Baptist Church received the prestigious award at a special ceremony at the Executive Mansion in Richmond on April 10, 2018; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Spring Hill Baptist Church hereby be commended on receiving a 2018 Governor's Volunteerism and Community Service Award; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Travis Warren, pastor of Spring Hill Baptist Church, as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the church's legacy of grace, kindness, compassion, and service.
