WHEREAS, in 2024, Kierra Wheeler, a forward on the Norfolk State University women's basketball team, helped the team win the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship and was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the BOXTOROW HBCU National Player of the Year; and
WHEREAS, a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kierra Wheeler won a state basketball championship in her freshman year of high school and reached 1,000 career points the following season; she continued to excel in basketball at Daytona State College, then transferred to Norfolk State University (NSU) in 2022; and
WHEREAS, since then, Kierra Wheeler has earned numerous accolades and helped the NSU Spartans win two consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship titles; and
WHEREAS, over the course of her junior season in 2023–2024, Kierra Wheeler was one of the most dominant players in MEAC, averaging 17.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game; she recorded nine 20-point games, two 30-point games, and multiple double-doubles, including a career-high game in which she scored 33 points and had 17 rebounds; and
WHEREAS, as the MEAC Player of the Year and the BOXTOROW HBCU National Player of the Year, Kierra Wheeler was selected as a member of the 2023–2024 Women's Basketball All-MEAC Team and the BOXTOROW HBCU All-America First Team; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the MEAC championship title, Kierra Wheeler helped the NSU Spartans earn their third consecutive regular season title, set the program record for wins in a season with 27, and advance to the National Collegiate Athletics Association tournament; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Kierra Wheeler hereby be commended on winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year award and the BOXTOROW HBCU National Player of the Year during her incredible 2023–2024 season with the Norfolk State University women's basketball team; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kierra Wheeler as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her exceptional athletic achievements.
