WHEREAS, Janice Pryde Davies, an accomplished educator and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and member of the Fredericksburg community, died on March 20, 2024; and
WHEREAS, Janice Davies attended District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) before earning a degree from what is, today, the University of the District of Columbia and studying at New York University and the University of Virginia; and
WHEREAS, as an educator with DCPS, including the newly integrated Barnard Elementary School, Janice Davies contributed greatly to the academic, social, and emotional well-being of her students, supporting their success both in and out of the classroom; and
WHEREAS, after relocating to Fredericksburg in 1962, Janice Davies became an active and engaged member of her new community and devoted herself to raising and caring for her children; and
WHEREAS, Janice Davies' passion for teaching and mentoring others led her to serve as a homebound instructor for pregnant teenagers and as a Girl Scouts of the USA troop leader for a troop that held the distinction of being both the largest and the only African American Girl Scout troop in Fredericksburg at the time; and
WHEREAS, Janice Davies gave generously of her time and energy over the years through her support of a number of community organizations, including the American Cancer Society and the Fredericksburg Area Sickle Cell Association, receiving a plethora of accolades in recognition of her service; and
WHEREAS, guided throughout her life by her faith, Janice Davies enjoyed worship and fellowship with her community and spearheaded a number of initiatives at Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) in Fredericksburg, where her husband, the Reverend Lawrence A. Davies, served as pastor; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by her daughters, Lauren and Karen, Janice Davies will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her loving husband, Lawrence; her daughter, Sharron, and her family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Janice Pryde Davies, a treasured member of the Fredericksburg community whose light brightened countless lives; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Janice Pryde Davies as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
