Celebrating the life of Rebecca Hanna Lyon Scarborough.

WHEREAS, Rebecca Hanna Lyon Scarborough, a beloved daughter, dedicated social worker and activist, and longtime member of the Fairfax County community, died on July 2, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Rebecca Scarborough graduated from Hayfield Secondary School of Fairfax County Public Schools before earning a bachelor's degree in theater and psychology from Muhlenberg College and a master's degree in social work from George Mason University; and

WHEREAS, Rebecca Scarborough worked tirelessly for the benefit of others over several years in her capacity as a teacher's aide and social worker; and

WHEREAS, Rebecca Scarborough spent the last years of her life in Maine, where she devoted her time and energy to promoting justice in her community; and

WHEREAS, Rebecca Scarborough was an active member of various advocacy groups, including her local chapter of Standing Up for Racial Justice and the Maine People's Alliance, and frequently participated in demonstrations and other events in support of these groups and their causes; and

WHEREAS, in the weeks before her passing, Rebecca Scarborough notably provided testimony to members of the Maine State Legislature advocating for paid family and medical leave; in July 2023, Maine Governor Janet Mills signed into law legislation that guarantees paid family and medical leave to nearly all workers in the state; and

WHEREAS, guided throughout her life by her faith, Rebecca Scarborough enjoyed worship and fellowship with her community at Adas Yoshuron Synagogue in Rockland, Maine, where she was a member of the board; and

WHEREAS, Rebecca Scarborough will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her mother and stepfather, Catherine and Stu; her father and stepmother, Keith and Janice; her brother, Matthew, and his family; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Rebecca Hanna Lyon Scarborough, a treasured member of the Fairfax County community whose advocacy and generosity of spirit made an impact on countless lives; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rebecca Hanna Lyon Scarborough as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
