WHEREAS, John R. Henry of Orange County, the longtime president and principal steward of Rapidan Habitat for Humanity, retired in December 2009 following 18 years of faithful service to his community and fellow citizens; and WHEREAS, in 1992, John Henry was chiefly responsible for the founding of the Rapidan Habitat for Humanity at the Orange Presbyterian Church; and WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical ministry that builds homes for people in need, guided by the belief that every man, woman, and child should have a decent, safe, and affordable place to live; and WHEREAS, Rapidan Habitat for Humanity received its first charter in 1994, which included the Counties of Orange, Culpeper, and Madison; and WHEREAS, in June 1999, John Henry challenged the Lake of the Woods Church to partner with Rapidan Habitat for Humanity to build a house in eastern Orange County, which led to the completion of a house in the summer of 2000; and WHEREAS, John Henry's major talent is as Habitat for Humanity's promoter and cheerleader and, most importantly, primary fundraiser; he has been responsible for obtaining $1.5 million in grants and materials over the years; and WHEREAS, John Henry has established lasting relationships with generous supporters in the community such as 84 Lumber, American Woodmark, Sedwick Building Supplies, and many other local businesses that regularly donate lumber, roofing, trim, cabinets, and all of the products and supplies needed to complete a project; and WHEREAS, John Henry especially has enjoyed organizing two special and very popular Rapidan Habitat for Humanity fundraising events: the local golf tournament and the annual big dance benefit; and WHEREAS, in April 1999, John Henry received the Leadership Award from the Rapidan Habitat for Humanity board of directors for his many contributions as president; in September 2001, he was awarded the prestigious Warren J. Lodge Award by the Lake of the Woods Association; and WHEREAS, when John Henry helped start Rapidan Habitat for Humanity it served three counties; he retired from the Orange County affiliate, and now Culpeper County and Madison County operate their own affiliates; and WHEREAS, John Henry is extremely proud that the Orange County Habitat for Humanity affiliate has secured land to start its 25th house project in 2010; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate John R. Henry for his outstanding service to Rapidan Habitat for Humanity, his community, and the Commonwealth; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John R. Henry as an expression of the General Assembly's appreciation of his many accomplishments and best wishes for a joyous and well-deserved retirement. |
