SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 195 Commending the Glenvar High School boys' soccer team.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 6, 2024 Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 7, 2024

 

WHEREAS, the Glenvar High School boys' soccer team earned the program's first-ever state title with a victory in the Virginia High School League Class 2 state championship in July 2023; and

WHEREAS, the Glenvar High School Highlanders faced the defending state champions, the Clarke County High School Eagles, in a rematch of the 2022 state final; and

WHEREAS, the Clarke County Eagles pressed the attack early and often, but Marco Gustafson, goalie for the Glenvar Highlanders, weathered the storm and made several crucial saves throughout the game; and

WHEREAS, the Glenvar Highlanders recorded only one shot on goal, but made it count, winning 1-0 after Jake Williams headed in a corner kick from Colin Clapper in the 78th minute; and

WHEREAS, the game winner by Glenvar's Jake Williams was also his first goal of his high school career; and

WHEREAS, the Glenvar Highlanders finished the season with an impressive 20-1-1 record, along with the state crown; and

WHEREAS, the victorious season is a testament to the skill and determination of all the student-athletes, the leadership and guidance of the coaches and staff, and the passionate support of friends, family members, and the entire Glenvar High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Glenvar High School boys' soccer team on winning the Virginia High School League Class 2 state championship in 2023; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Josh Jones, head coach of the Glenvar High School boys' soccer team, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the team's historic achievement and best wishes for the future.
