WHEREAS, Ronald G. Montgomery, the sheriff of York County and Poquoson, has served the community with dedication and distinction as a law-enforcement officer for 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Montgomery was born and raised in York County, where he graduated from York High School, then began his law enforcement career in January 1975 at the age of 21; and
WHEREAS, over the course of his distinguished career at the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office, Ronald Montgomery served under three sheriffs, and steadily rose through the ranks, serving as a uniformed patrol deputy, an investigator, captain of the Investigations Division, captain of Law Enforcement Operations, and the major/chief deputy; and
WHEREAS, as the commander of the Investigations Division, Ronald Montgomery headed a three-year drug operation that led to the arrest of more than 200 people for narcotics violations; during this time, he also appeared on America's Most Wanted for a three-year-old unsolved homicide case, where the only lead was a sketch artist's drawing from a witness, and the show led to an arrest three days after it aired; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of his leadership skills, Ronald Montgomery was appointed to fill an unexpired term as sheriff on January 1, 2023, and was officially elected as sheriff in November 2023; and
WHEREAS, through his commitment to the implementation of new technology and the best practices and procedures, Ronald Montgomery has been instrumental in modernizing the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Montgomery purchased the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office's very first computer using drug asset forfeiture funds and has since overseen the implementation of mobile data terminals in all patrol vehicles; he guided the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office to become one of the first law-enforcement agencies in the region to purchase TASER less-lethal devices and one of the first agencies in the Commonwealth to deploy body-worn camera systems to the entire patrol division; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Montgomery was the driving force behind the acquisition of a state-of-the-art mobile command post and the development of the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office's unmanned aerial systems team, which is nationally recognized for its advancement in the use of drones in public safety; and
WHEREAS, Ronald Montgomery reintroduced the K-9 program, spearheaded the project for the future construction of a new office building, and established the Citizen Advisory Committee, which has been effective in creating more collaborative and communicative relationships between the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office and the community; and
WHEREAS, highly respected in the field of law enforcement, Ronald Montgomery has received numerous accolades and is a member of the Virginia Sheriffs' Association, the National Sheriffs' Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police; and
WHEREAS, outside of his career, Ronald Montgomery has given back to the community by mentoring young people as a middle school football and baseball coach in York County and was the head baseball coach at Bruton High School for two years; he is also a member of the Grafton Kiwanis Club and serves on the board of directors for the York County Chamber of Commerce and the local Boys and Girls Club; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Ronald G. Montgomery, the sheriff of York County and Poquoson, for his 50 years of service as a law-enforcement officer; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ronald G. Montgomery as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his achievements in service to the residents of York County and Poquoson.
