SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 71
Commending Sheriff Charles E. Jett and the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

WHEREAS, Sheriff Charles E. Jett and the Stafford County Sheriff's Office were proclaimed a 2008–2009 National Law Enforcement Challenge first-place winner; and

WHEREAS, the National Law Enforcement Challenge (NLEC) awards are sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and recognize and reward the best overall traffic safety programs in the United States; and

WHEREAS, NLEC applicants were judged by a group of traffic, safety, and law-enforcement professionals in June 2009, and the Stafford County Sheriff's Office was selected from more than 530 applications submitted to IACP; and

WHEREAS, the NLEC award program provides law-enforcement professionals an opportunity to make a difference in their communities through a friendly competition between similar sizes and types of law-enforcement agencies; and

WHEREAS, with 161 deputies, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office competed in Sheriff Category 5, 101–200 Sworn Deputies, against some of the country's most professional, productive, and hardworking law-enforcement teams; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Jett believes in the value and strength of teamwork, and the first priority of his deputies is the safety and well-being of the citizens of Stafford County; and

WHEREAS, the Stafford County Sheriff's Office utilizes innovative traffic safety programs and strategies to get people to buckle up and slow down; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Jett and his exemplary staff were honored as a NLEC first-place winner on October 6, 2009, at the Highway Safety Awards Breakfast during the IACP Annual Conference in Denver; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Sheriff Charles E. Jett and the Stafford County Sheriff's Office as a 2008–2009 National Law Enforcement Challenge first-place winner; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sheriff Charles E. Jett and his staff for their outstanding achievement and their dedication to the citizens of Stafford County.
