SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 630
Celebrating the life of Randolph Nicklas Reynolds, Sr.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, July 1, 2024

 

WHEREAS, Randolph Nicklas Reynolds, Sr., an esteemed business executive and philanthropist and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and member of the Richmond community, died on May 17, 2024; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Reynolds graduated from St. George's School in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1961, where he was senior prefect and a member of the football, basketball, wrestling, and tennis teams, and he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Bellarmine University; and

WHEREAS, in 1969, Randolph Reynolds joined Reynolds Metals Company, which was founded by his grandfather, Richard S. Reynolds, and he rose through the ranks to become president of Reynolds International, Inc., in 1978 and its chief executive officer three years later, as well as a member of the Reynolds Metals Company Board of Directors in 1984; and

WHEREAS, following his retirement from the Reynolds Metals Company in 2000, Randolph Reynolds led a team of investors to acquire the Alumina Company of Guinea, an enterprise that leases the assets and manages the operations of Friguia, a bauxite mining and alumina production facility in Guinea, West Africa, and he later helped sell the group's interest in 2002 to RUSAL, one of the largest aluminum companies in the world; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Reynolds had success in the world of commercial real estate as a principal of Reynolds Development Company, a private real estate management and development company that he founded in 2001 alongside several members of the Reynolds family; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Reynolds gave generously of his time and expertise over the years on various boards; among his most recent endeavors, he served on the board of RUSAL and as president of the Richard S. Reynolds Foundation, the Randolph and Susan Reynolds Foundation, and the William G. Reynolds, Jr. Charitable Foundation; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Reynolds was notably appointed by President William J. Clinton to serve as chairman of the board of the Defense Enterprise Fund, a nonprofit organization that oversaw the conversion of defense firms in the former Soviet Union into entities with peaceful purposes; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his achievements as a businessman and philanthropist, Randolph Reynolds was named Alumnus of the Year by Bellarmine University in 1994 and was included in the school's Gallery of Distinguished Graduates; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Reynolds was also selected as one of the 2020–2021 JA Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame Laureates by Junior Achievement of Central Virginia, a nonprofit organization that helps prepare young people for success in their future careers; and

WHEREAS, Randolph Reynolds will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Susan; his sons, Randolph, Jr., Ralph, and Robert, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Randolph Nicklas Reynolds, Sr., a treasured member of the Richmond community whose legacy will endure for generations to come; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Randolph Nicklas Reynolds, Sr., as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
