HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
Requesting the week of October 1 through 7, 2012, to be recognized as "hawaii fishing and Seafood Week".
WHEREAS, living in Hawaii, the heart of the Pacific, the sea and its bounty have sustained Hawaii's residents by providing food, recreation, transportation, and spirituality; and
WHEREAS, fishing is a tradition woven into local culture that has been passed down for generations; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's residents have learned to care for and sustain these resources through active participation, use, conservation, and management; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's residents consume more than three times the national per capita average of seafood each year; and
WHEREAS, Hawaii's fisheries produce fresh, wholesome, and healthy seafood for Hawaii's residents and visitors; and
WHEREAS, supporting local seafood production in Hawaii is recognized as a priority to reduce dependence on imported goods and provide essential food security for our island state; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of
the Twenty-sixth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2012,
the Senate concurring, that the Legislature recognizes the week of October 1
through 7, 2012, as "Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Week"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that during this week, the State is requested to focus on highlighting the importance of fishing and seafood traditions in Hawaii, culminating with the "Hawaii Fishing and Seafood Festival" hosted by the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group at Pier 38, Honolulu Harbor, on October 7, 2012; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor and the President of the Pacific Islands Fisheries Group.
