TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2010

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to the university of hawaii school of travel industry management.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that under article X, section 6 of the state constitution it is a matter of statewide concern that the school of travel industry management at the University of Hawaii at Manoa remain autonomous from the Schidler college of business administration.  The autonomy of the school of travel industry management enables it to be the most efficient of the schools and colleges that comprise the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  Such autonomy also enables the school to remain competitive with its peer institutions in both the nation and around the world.

The purpose of this Act is to establish a school of travel industry management at the University of Hawaii at Manoa that is separate and independent of any school or college of business administration also established at the university.

SECTION 2.  Chapter 304A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new subpart to part IV to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

" .  School of Travel Industry Management

§304A-     School of travel industry management.  There shall be a school of travel industry management at the University of Hawaii at Manoa that shall be separate and independent of any school or college of business administration established at the university.  The school shall be under the direction of a dean or director, who shall be appointed by the president of the university with the approval of the board of regents; provided that the person appointed as dean or director shall not simultaneously hold a post as dean or director of any school or college of business administration established at the university.  The school shall offer courses of study as may be deemed appropriate and confer degrees as may be authorized by the board of regents."

SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
