SENATE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
URGING THE PEOPLE OF KOREA TO ENGAGE IN DIALOGUE REGARDING THE PEACEFUL REUNIFICATION OF THE KOREAN PENINSULA.
WHEREAS, in 1945, in the aftermath of World War II, Korea was partitioned along the thirty-eighth parallel, with the North under Soviet Union occupation and the South under United States occupation; and
WHEREAS, in the 1950s, conflict between the Communist-inspired government in the North and the pro-United States government in the South led to further division into two political entities and to the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, the Korean War did not produce a formalized peace treaty, which has contributed to high tensions and the continued division of the Korean Peninsula to the present day; and
WHEREAS, the achievement of reunification, peace, and security on the Korean Peninsula would provide the country with widespread access to affordable labor, abundant natural resources, and economic and military growth; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-eighth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2015, the House of Representatives concurring, that this body urges the people of Korea to engage in dialogue regarding the peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
