2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Norm Peterson, who passed away on | ||||||
4 | September 16, 2024; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Norm Peterson notably served as the longtime | ||||||
6 | director of government relations for the U.S. Department of | ||||||
7 | Energy's (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory (Argonne) for more | ||||||
8 | than 36 years; in this position, he built and maintained | ||||||
9 | relationships with elected officials at the local, state, and | ||||||
10 | federal levels as well as economic development agencies, | ||||||
11 | universities, and companies, and his work proved critical to | ||||||
12 | Argonne's success and impact; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Norm Peterson was instrumental in arranging | ||||||
14 | meetings with members of the Illinois General Assembly to help | ||||||
15 | them understand the complex potential of energy storage, the | ||||||
16 | capabilities of Argonne's GREET modeling system to calculate | ||||||
17 | the carbon intensity and greenhouse gas emissions of vehicles | ||||||
18 | on the road, and how scientific facilities at Argonne can | ||||||
19 | create new energy infrastructure or revitalize aging | ||||||
20 | infrastructure; and

21 | WHEREAS, Norm Peterson contributed to many momentous | ||||||
22 | projects at Argonne during his career, including the |

1 | establishment of the Argonne Guest House becoming the first | ||||||
2 | lab building funded by the State of Illinois and the selection | ||||||
3 | of Argonne by the DOE to lead the Joint Center for Energy | ||||||
4 | Storage Research, the Q-NEXT quantum center, and the Energy | ||||||
5 | Storage Research Alliance; his efforts also helped Argonne | ||||||
6 | construct multiple facilities that broadened the lab's | ||||||
7 | scientific capabilities and powered groundbreaking research by | ||||||
8 | scientists around the globe while raising awareness of the | ||||||
9 | many benefits of science and technology for national | ||||||
10 | prosperity and security; and

11 | WHEREAS, Norm Peterson retired from the role of director | ||||||
12 | of government relations at Argonne in 2023; since then, he had | ||||||
13 | continued to serve as a senior advisor on a part-time basis; | ||||||
14 | throughout his career, he was noted for successfully | ||||||
15 | generating interest and enthusiasm among lawmakers, staff | ||||||
16 | members, and others in the work being done at Argonne; and

17 | WHEREAS, Prior to joining Argonne, Norm Peterson worked at | ||||||
18 | the Tinley Park Mental Health Facility for the Illinois | ||||||
19 | Department of Children and Family Services before joining the | ||||||
20 | administration of former Illinois Governor Jim Thompson, where | ||||||
21 | he was tasked with developing and launching an innovative | ||||||
22 | youth program statewide; he then became the first executive | ||||||
23 | director of the Governor's Commission on Science and | ||||||
24 | Technology for the State; and

1 | WHEREAS, Norm Peterson will be remembered as a trusted | ||||||
2 | confidant, a remarkable colleague, and a mentor and friend to | ||||||
3 | many; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Norm Peterson is survived by his longtime | ||||||
5 | partner, Lori Clark; his daughter, Erika Peterson; and his | ||||||
6 | granddaughter, Emma Moon; therefore, be it
| ||||||
7 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
8 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
9 | Norm Peterson and extend our sincere condolences to his | ||||||
10 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
