A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to require the north carolina commission on indian affairs to coordinate a task force to study the feAsibility of establishing a North Carolina American Indian Heritage Center.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  The Commission on Indian Affairs shall coordinate a task force to study the feasibility of establishing a North Carolina American Indian Heritage Center as a tourist attraction that would promote American Indian cultures and preservation, cultural tourism, customs, and arts that are reflective of the American Indian tribes in North Carolina. As part of its study, the task force shall review existing State cultural facilities to determine whether such facilities are adhering to their mission and are being maintained accordingly.

SECTION 2.  The task force shall include one representative of each of the following tribes and organizations: Coharie, Eastern Band of Cherokees, Haliwa Saponi, Lumbee, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Sappony, Waccamaw‑Siouan, Cumberland County Association for Indian People, Guilford Native American Association, Metrolina Native American Association, and the Triangle Native American Society. The persons appointed in this section shall be recommended by the tribes or organizations.

SECTION 3.  Members of the task force shall serve without compensation but may receive travel reimbursement from funds available to the Department of Administration. No expenses shall be paid by the Commission on Indian Affairs.

SECTION 4.  The Commission on Indian Affairs shall report the findings and recommendations of the task force, along with any recommendations, to the Joint Legislative Commission on Governmental Operations by March 1, 2017.

SECTION 5.  This act is effective when it becomes law.
