     Recognizes historical importance and cultural significance of Hinchliffe Stadium and annual football game between Montclair State University and William Paterson University at Hinchliffe Stadium.

An Assembly Resolution recognizing the historical importance and cultural significance of Hinchliffe Stadium and the annual football game between Montclair State University and William Paterson University played at Hinchliffe Stadium.

 

Whereas, Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey is one of only two surviving Negro League stadiums in the nation and holds immense historical significance; and

Whereas, The stadium, built in 1932, was renovated and reopened in 2023 as a 10,000 seat stadium, and features the Charles J. Muth Museum, a treasure trove of baseball's past; and

Whereas, Hinchliffe Stadium is a landmark of sports and culture, hosting numerous historic events and serving as a testament to the rich legacy of African American athletes and the Negro Leagues; and

Whereas, The preservation of historic sites like Hinchliffe Stadium is vital for educating future generations about the contributions of African American athletes to American sports and society; and

Whereas, Montclair State University and William Paterson University have a longstanding football rivalry, and the annual game between the two institutions is a celebrated event that brings together students, alumni, and the community; and

Whereas, Plans to hold the annual rivalry game at Hinchliffe Stadium will not only honor the legacy of the stadium, but also promote its historical and cultural significance; and

Whereas, Notable figures such as Larry Doby, C.C. Sabathia, and Curtis Granderson have emphasized the importance of preserving Negro League stadiums and the history these stadiums represent; and

Whereas, Community involvement, educational initiatives, and local partnerships are essential for the continued preservation and promotion of Hinchliffe Stadium; and

Whereas, The football game between Montclair State University and William Paterson University provides an opportunity for local governments, businesses, and community organizations to support the history of Hinchliffe Stadium; now, therefore,

 

     Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    This House recognizes the historical importance and cultural significance of Hinchliffe Stadium to the State of New Jersey and the nation. 

 

     2.    This House also recognizes the significance of an annual football game between Montclair State University and William Paterson University at Hinchliffe Stadium as a sporting event that honors the history and legacy of the stadium.

     3.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Presidents and Athletic Directors of Montclair State University and William Paterson University, the Governor, New Jersey legislators representing the districts in which these institutions are located, and the New Jersey Historical Society.
