        Introduced  by  Sen. VALESKY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when
          printed to be committed to the Committee on Health
        AN ACT to amend the public health law,  in  relation  to  cardiovascular
          technologists
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
     1    Section 1. Section 3501 of the public health law is amended by  adding
     2  a new subdivision 20 to read as follows:
     3    20.  "Cardiovascular technologist" means a person who is authorized to
     4  assist with diagnostic examinations and therapeutic interventions of the
     5  heart and blood vessels under the direct  supervision  of  a  physician,
     6  including   invasive  cardiology-cardiac  catheterization,  non-invasive
     7  cardiology, non-invasive peripheral vascular study, and cardiac electro-
     8  physiology.
     9    § 2. The opening paragraph of subdivision 4 of  section  3502  of  the
    10  public health law is designated paragraph (a) and a new paragraph (b) is
    11  added to read as follows:
    12    (b)  Nothing  in  this  article or in any other provision of law shall
    13  prevent a cardiovascular technologist, acting under  the  direct  super-
    14  vision  of  a  physician,  from introducing contrast medium to a patient
    15  during a cardiovascular diagnostic or interventional  procedure  through
    16  an  arterial line placed by a licensed practitioner. The introduction of
    17  contrast medium in preparation of or during such  procedures  shall  not
    18  constitute  the  administration  of  medication for the purposes of this
    19  section.
    20    § 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
