A RESOLUTION

Honoring the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first college

2

of pharmacy in North America.

3

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, founded in

4

1821, is renowned as the first college of pharmacy in North

5

America; and

6

WHEREAS, The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy is one of five

7

colleges of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia,

8

which has undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs

9

in biology, physical therapy, health care administration and

10

health policy, as well as pharmacy; and

11

WHEREAS, In the course of its nearly two centuries of

12

educational excellence in the field of pharmacy, the school has

13

launched the careers of many innovative and pioneering

14

individuals in the field of health care, including the founders

15

of six of the world's leading pharmaceutical companies; and

WHEREAS, Graduates include John Wyeth, Class of 1854, founder

2

of John Wyeth & Brother, which is now a part of Pfizer; William

3

R. Warner, Class of 1856, founder of Warner-Lambert Company,

4

Inc., which merged with Pfizer; Sir Henry S. Wellcome, Class of

5

1874, and Silas M. Burroughs, Class of 1877, who founded

6

Burroughs Wellcome and Company in England, which is now part of

7

GlaxoSmithKline; Josiah Lilly, Class of 1882, and his son, Dr.

8

Eli Lilly, Class of 1907, who founded Eli Lilly and Company;

9

Gerald F. Rorer, Class of 1931, founder of Rorer

10

Pharmaceuticals, which is now sanofi-aventis; and Robert L.

11

McNeil, Class of 1938, who with his grandfather, Robert McNeil,

12

Class of 1876, founded NcNeil Laboratories, which is now NcNeil

13

Nutritionals and Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals; and

14

WHEREAS, Graduates have made significant contributions in

15

fields beyond pharmacy, from pioneering the use of X-rays to

16

developing motor oil additives and rechargeable batteries,

17

improving science and health care in their communities and in

18

the lives of people world wide; therefore be it

19

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the

20

Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first college of Pharmacy

21

in North America.
