| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Urging the Federal Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee to |
2 | recommend to the United States Postal Service that, in |
3 | recognition of the deaths of more than 100,000 coal miners, |
4 | an image of an American coal miner be placed on the face of a |
5 | United States postage stamp. |
6 | WHEREAS, Year after year, Federal and state resolutions of |
7 | legislatures are presented and written into the official |
8 | government record; and |
9 | WHEREAS, A new set of Federal postage stamps illustrating |
10 | plants, vegetables, trees, animals, cartoon characters, insects, |
11 | fish, birds, seashells and even snowflakes are recommended to |
12 | and approved by the Federal Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee |
13 | based on such resolutions; and |
14 | WHEREAS, There is no postage stamp recognizing the tremendous |
15 | contribution of coal miners to the success of our country; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee passes on |
2 | approving the American Coal Miner Stamp yearly, despite the fact |
3 | that coal miners and their families have helped shape the |
4 | history and culture of the United States and Pennsylvania, and |
5 | thousands of petitions are distributed and signed to recognize |
6 | that more than 100,000 coal miners died as they excavated the |
7 | fuel for our country's Industrial Revolution; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The United States and this Commonwealth are indebted |
9 | to all coal miners who work in difficult and dangerous |
10 | conditions and to the hundreds of thousands of people who have |
11 | suffered from lung disease and other maladies caused by working |
12 | in unsafe and unhealthy mine conditions; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Coal miners have fueled our nation's economic engine |
14 | and ensured our military security by providing coal, not just |
15 | for the generation of power, but as an essential element in the |
16 | steel-making process; and |
17 | WHEREAS, The coal miners that died knew the risks involved, |
18 | but they were proud to take that risk, and they labored in the |
19 | company of good and loyal friends in order to earn an honest |
20 | paycheck which provided for their families; and |
21 | WHEREAS, The idea of issuing a United States postage stamp to |
22 | honor the efforts of the American coal miner has received |
23 | positive and complimentary support; and |
24 | WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth and of the country |
25 | at large support honoring American coal miners with a postage |
26 | stamp for the important contributions they have made to our |
27 | country; and |
28 | WHEREAS, The Coal Miners Stamp Committee of Northeastern |
29 | Pennsylvania supports the creation of a stamp that recognizes |
30 | the American coal miner; and |

1 | WHEREAS, The Coal Miners Stamp Committee of Northeastern |
2 | Pennsylvania has agreed to organize a nationwide campaign to |
3 | educate and inform the American public on the importance of this |
4 | project; therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the Federal |
6 | Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee to approve a United States |
7 | postage stamp in recognition of the deaths of more than 100,000 |
8 | coal miners by placing an image of an American coal miner on the |
9 | face of a United States postage stamp; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted by |
11 | the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to the Federal |
12 | Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee; and be it further |
13 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the |
14 | Governor, Lieutenant Governor, the Majority Leader of the |
15 | Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and all |
16 | members of the General Assembly to contact their counterparts in |
17 | other coal mining states to implore them to promote the American |
18 | Coal Miner Stamp initiative. |
