A RESOLUTION

  

1

Honoring the life and extending condolences for the supreme

2

sacrifice of Pittsburgh Police Officer Stephen J. Mayhle, who

3

was killed in the line of duty on April 4, 2009.

4

WHEREAS, Officer Stephen J. Mayhle, 29, a two-year veteran of

5

the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police and member of the Fraternal

Order of Police, had always dreamed of being a police officer;

2

and

3

WHEREAS, Officer Mayhle was born in Indiana, Pennsylvania,

4

and attended Indiana Wesleyan High School; and

5

WHEREAS, Officer Mayhle graduated from Indiana University of

6

Pennsylvania in 2002 with a degree in criminology; and

7

WHEREAS, On the morning of April 4, 2009, Officer Mayhle and

8

two fellow officers, Paul Sciullo II and Eric Kelly, responded

9

to a call for assistance due to a domestic disturbance in the

10

Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh; and

11

WHEREAS, Officer Mayhle was killed at the scene in a

12

senseless and unwarranted attack that also took the lives of

13

Officer Sciullo and Officer Kelly; and

14

WHEREAS, Officer Mayhle is survived by his wife, Shandra,

15

whom he married in 2000, and his two daughters, Jennifer and

16

Brooklynn, his parents, Ronald and Marjorie, and his two

17

brothers, Jeffrey and Jamie; and

18

WHEREAS, Thousands of people from near and far, including

19

police officers from towns and cities across the United States

20

and Canada, gathered in Pittsburgh to mourn the loss of Officer

21

Mayhle, Officer Sciullo and Officer Kelly as the heroes lay in

22

state in the City-County Building; and

23

WHEREAS, Officer Mayhle will be remembered as a loving

24

husband and father, a dedicated public servant for the City of

25

Pittsburgh and a true hero who lost his life while performing

26

his sworn duty to protect and serve those in need; therefore be

27

it

28

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life

29

and extend condolences for the supreme sacrifice of Pittsburgh

30

Police Officer Stephen J. Mayhle; and be it further

Officer Mayhle's wife and children.
