| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing May 2009 as "Blue Star Mothers of America Month" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, The Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., was founded |
4 | as a patriotic service organization on February 2, 1942, to |
5 | unite mothers who had sons or daughters in the United States |
6 | Armed Forces; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The nonpartisan, nonsectarian, nondiscriminatory and |
8 | nonprofit organization was chartered by the Congress of the |
9 | United States in 1960; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Persons eligible for membership in the organization |
11 | include mothers and stepmothers who have sons or daughters who |
12 | are currently serving in the United States military or who are |
13 | honorably discharged veterans; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Family members and friends may become associate |
2 | members, and fathers of military personnel or veterans may join |
3 | the Dad's Association; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The work of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., |
5 | includes providing support for active duty service personnel and |
6 | their families, promoting patriotism and assisting various |
7 | veterans organizations such as the American Gold Star Mothers, |
8 | Inc.; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The work of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., |
10 | is increasingly important with more than 450,000 members of the |
11 | United States Army Reserve Components having been called to |
12 | active service around the world since 2001, including more than |
13 | 20,000 of Pennsylvania's soldiers and airmen, consisting of more |
14 | than 4,000 soldiers of the 56th Stryker Brigade and more than |
15 | 1,000 soldiers from the 28th Combat Aviation Brigade who were |
16 | deployed to Iraq; and |
17 | WHEREAS, The dedication, sacrifice and hard work of the |
18 | devoted members of the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., merit |
19 | recognition; and |
20 | WHEREAS, The Blue Star Service Flag is the official banner |
21 | authorized by the Department of Defense for display by families |
22 | who have members serving in the United States Armed Forces |
23 | during a period of war or armed conflict the nation may be |
24 | engaged in for the duration of such hostilities; and |
25 | WHEREAS, The Blue Star Flag was designed and patented by |
26 | World War I Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the 5th Ohio |
27 | Infantry who had two sons serving on the front lines and the |
28 | flag quickly became an unofficial symbol of a child in service; |
29 | therefore be it |
30 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May |

1 | 2009 as "Blue Star Mothers of America Month" in Pennsylvania; |
2 | and be it further |
3 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives encourage all |
4 | citizens of this Commonwealth to take some time during the month |
5 | of May 2009 to honor and recognize their dedication and |
6 | sacrifice; and be it further |
7 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize and |
8 | celebrate the history and contributions of Blue Star Mothers of |
9 | America, Inc.; and be it further |
10 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to |
11 | Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. |
