| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing May 2009 as "American Stroke Month" in Pennsylvania. |
2 | WHEREAS, Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term |
3 | disability and the third leading cause of death in the United |
4 | States, killing about 145,000 people nationwide and more than |
5 | 7,000 Pennsylvanians each year; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The theme for "American Stroke Month 2009" is "Know |
7 | the Stroke Warning Signs and Act in Time" to educate the public |
8 | and policymakers about the importance of recognizing a stroke |
9 | and acting quickly during a stroke emergency and to promote the |
10 | program "Power to End Stroke" to reduce stroke in African |
11 | Americans, who are at particularly high risk of the disease, by |
12 | empowering them to reduce their risk, recognize the warning |
13 | signs and respond quickly; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Warning signs of stroke include sudden numbness or |

1 | weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the |
2 | body, sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding, |
3 | sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble |
4 | walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination, and sudden, |
5 | severe headache with no known cause; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Americans are more aware of the risk factors and |
7 | warning signs for stroke than in the past, but two in five |
8 | adults still cannot identify any symptoms; and |
9 | WHEREAS, New and effective treatments have been developed to |
10 | treat and minimize the severity and damaging effects of strokes, |
11 | but much more research is needed; therefore be it |
12 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize May |
13 | 2009 as "American Stroke Month" in Pennsylvania and urge all the |
14 | citizens of this Commonwealth to familiarize themselves with the |
15 | risk factors associated with stroke, recognize the warning signs |
16 | and symptoms and, on first signs of a stroke, dial 9-1-1 |
17 | immediately in order to reduce the devastating effects of stroke |
18 | on society. |
